Why General Grievous Coughs so much

November 8, 2019

Throughout the clone wars, and especially
in revenge of the sith, General grievous is always coughing as if he just took a massive
hit from Jabba’s Hookah pipe. So why is this the case? Well in Canon, the cough was the result of
his intensive cybernetics, which put a strain on his remaining organs, including his lungs,
resulting in his frequent cough. It’s that such intensive cybernetics on
an individual have rarely been done before, so imperfections were common. However, by the time Darth Vader’s cybernetics
were implemented, the technology for them vastly improved, resulting in easier breathing. Though there were of course other problems
Vader faced while in his suit, so the technology wasn’t perfect even then. From a behind the scenes standpoint, George
Lucas and his team included the cough to let the audiences know that Grievous was a cyborg
and not a robot. They also wanted to show the flaws of having
cyborg prosthetics, and that they were usually only used after sustained injuries. Possibly foreshadowing Anakin’s fate at
the end of the movie. In Legends, Grievous originally didn’t posses
a cough. Rather he obtained it during the Battle of
Coruscant, where after he was successful in kidnapping Palpatine, Mace Windu crushed Grievous’
chest through the force in a failed attempt to rescue the Supreme Chancellor. Having his chest crushed not only damaged
his lungs to where he obtained a vicious cough, but it also forced him to be hunched over
for long periods of time. This injury also explained why he was so weak
in the revenge of the sith movie, when in the 2003 clone wars cartoon he was a killing
machine.

Every time he coughs it's George Lucas. During production George Lucas had Bronchitis and it gave them the idea to give Grievous his famous coughing.

I first noticed Grievous's coughing after 2003 Star Wars Clone Wars. I remember watching revenge of the sith, and seeing Grievous come in with that cough, made me remember why he had it bad, because Mace Windu messed his plates up so bad with his force crush that the crushed plates also cut up his internal organs, making him suffer internal damage and gave him such a nasty coughing that would remain for the rest of his life. It also severely weakened him before he could be properly healed, as Obi-Wan was making his entrance at the time to face him.
