What is Type 1 diabetes? A children’s guide | Diabetes UK

September 12, 2019

Goodnight sleep tight. Why me? What’s up? What are you? I’m me. I’m here to help. What’s up? I’m trying to work it out I’ve got Type 1 diabetes I just want to know what it all means. That’s why I’m here I know all about diabetes Let’s go inside the body and see what’s happening. Your body’s made of cells powered by glucose which gives you the energy to play and run and grow. Glucose where are you? Ah, what time do you call this I’m waiting Waiting waiting, waiting Glucose, waiting Glucose Your stomach breaks down carbohydrates from some foods like rice bread and sugar to make glucose and this travels in the blood stream to your cells Glucose where are you? The glucose needs something called insulin to unlock the door to your cells so it can get in Your body makes insulin in the pancreas which is just below your stomach When you have Type 1 diabetes your body doesn’t make any insulin It’s not because of anything you or your parents or anybody else did it just happens When the cells can’t get any glucose they feel very tired and can’t do things like they used to Oh, so tired Time for forty winks The body starts to break down fat to get energy and might lose weight too The body decides there’s too much glucose so it tries to get rid of it by making you pee. Peeing a lot makes you thirsty The cells really need glucose How can I get it to them? That’s where insulin comes in Because your pancreas doesn’t make it anymore you can give yourself insulin to help the glucose get into all your cells so they have all the energy they need Glucose am I glad to see you Fabulous darling mwah So then it’s all okay? Yes it’s all okay In fact it’s more than okay You can do everything just the same as everyone else and of course you get to meet me too. Goodnight, sleep tight Goodnight And remember you can always call me when you need me.

AWESOME video for kids, AND moms and dads- best I've found so far! I use it as a nurse, and I use it to teach my daughter's elementary's classes about diabetes.

    Hi there,

Great video! I have a lot of friends and family who are fighting Diabetes. I am a musician looking for a video to back song I wrote about Diabetes awareness and how insulin works in the body. Any chance I could collaborate my song with your video and throw it up on youtube?

Hi, I am Haslina, a dietetics student from Malaysia. This is a very fun and informative video for kids. My friends and I are organising a Type 1 DM program for children and adolescent living with Type 1 DM as part of our internship. Can I use this video and translate it to Malay for the program? Thanks.

A good health promotion idea however, using weight loss may not be one of the best side affects to explain insulin deficiency due to the rise in insulin misuse for maladaptive purposes and the devastating affects it can have on short and long term health. Diabulimia.

Hi, sorry to waste anyone's time but I have type 1 diabetes and there is no cure for it (yet). I caught it from a simple virus and my red blood cells think my pancreas is the virus and so they are killing my pancreas. You can't prevent getting type 1 but you can prevent type 2 and there is a cure for that. I suggest you research type 1 and 2 so you don't get them mixed up. Again I'm sorry for writing so much. If you have any questions, just ask me ā˜ŗ

Excellent Video! Excuse me for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about – Patlarny Diabetes Ruins Principle (should be on google have a look)? It is a great one off product for destroying diabetes without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my close friend Aubrey after a lifetime of fighting got astronomical success with it.

My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed as type 1 last night. Shes worried about perceptions and how this will affect her, I'm home picking up some clothes for her, hopefully when I get back to her in hospital this video will help her put her mind at rest.
