So, I’ve got a cold. How far do people have to be from me so they won’t catch it? This is a really important question and for the cold viruses it’s a pretty straightforward answer. And that
is: within six feet you may catch my cold. And the closer you are from six feet in, the more likely you’re going to catch my cold. But colds are also spread not just by
the air within that six foot rule. but they’re spread by hands and inanimate
objects. So if I cough in my hand and I touch something and you touch that something and bring it
to your mucous membranes like your nose or eye or mouth, then you can catch the
cold that way. But if you use the six foot rule for common colds, you’re going
to prevent getting most infections.
