    So he exercised 3-4 hours a day and ate after the food pyramid, namely lots of carbs, quite likely combined with fast-acting proteins like those delivered by whey shakes.
    Idk what to tell you except that this almost directly confirmes what you tried to disprove. You provoked massive insulin release that fd your bodies ability to handle insulin. That fat lady likely ate a ton of unnecessary carbs too.
    Are all the people around him oblivious to this massive gap in his reasoning?

    I never judge overweight people because it can happen to ANYONE ! I do have over three years of herb and supplement research where I discovered foods and herbs that can make you look and feel younger and healthier. I also combine daily cross-training which includes Cardio and WeightLifting. A Green based diet with organic herbs is like the HOLY GRAIL.

    Anyone who eats food with genetically modified organisms, will become overweight and have health issues, leading to chronic illness and premature death. That includes doctors, nurses, and anyone else who eats the poisonous food created by Monsanto Chemical, which was funded by our government to enable them to poison our major crops. Very few people can eat wheat and wheat products. The whole nation as well as other nations are now gluten free, not by choice, but for the sake of survival. The food manufacturers don't care, as long as they can rake in the dollars. Money takes precedence over human lives. Only the wealthy can afford to buy uncontaminated food. Is it part of Agenda 21?

    I not only controlled my Type 2 diabetes, I cured my neuropathy in my feet by taking Vitamin B-Complex and several other supplements. I take them every day. Medicare doesn't pay for my supplements. As of January 1st of this year, supplements are taxed in my state of New Jersey. I also take herbal supplements. Anyone who wants a list, just email me … [email protected] I will be glad to enumerate. I am going on 84 and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at least five or more years ago. I have lost track…haven't been to a doctor for so long. Food and supplements are my medicine. I pay for them. They work for me. I have very good immunity, even though I have seasonal allergies as well as winter allergies, like house dust and certain foods, but none that have ever threatened my life or given me asthma, like many unfortunate souls, including children and grandchildren of my own. I can't even bake cookies for my grandchildren, as they are troubled with allergies to certain ingredients besides wheat. My daughters are very strict about their food intake. Welcome to the 21st century.

    I am very thankful that you as a doctor a profession known to normally be laden heavily with narcissists is trying to evolve.     So basically it took him 15 minutes to say, all these horrible effects on human health are result of refined carbohydrates, sugar, and the crap that we eat. And that's only what we can measure, not the behavioral effects that we see in the astronomical increase of autism which is probably caused by food as well, all of which are unnatural to The Human Condition. The food pyramid, created by the food industry, to make people addicted to foods that are not natural, is the problem.

    I once knew a lady who fed her kids Hostess Ho Hos every morning before they went to school, because it said on the box, contains 8 essential vitamins and minerals! The average person is in the middle of the IQ range. Everyone below that gets stupider and stupider I can't figure these things out for them self, and is taken in by the Slicks advertising the tells them things like, contains all the essential vitamins and minerals, in this frankenfood that you're about to feed your kids, that causes them to fall asleep in class or bounce off the walls and unable to process information appropriately. This problem is bigger than trying to do some so-called scientific analysis, because we only have to look at where we are now and what we've done differently in the last 50 years to see where we are and where we're headed. There's no way the pharmaceutical industry is going to let some huge Revolution on eating healthy foods take their profits away to treat all the Melodies In illnesses and diseases that destroy us and kill us by changing our diet and suddenly becoming healthy. It's long been known that Chinese women who come to the United States have very low rates of ovarian and breast cancer. But after three generations in the United States, they're ovarian and breast cancer rates are the exact same for people who were born and raised here. The US diet is crap. We know that. And if they're willing to make Joe Camel illegal because smoking is bad for kids, then they should be willing to make changes about things like Cheetos, McDonald's, soda, and all the frankenfoods that were eating and feeding to our kids that are ensuring the generations from now we'll all still be very sick even if we suddenly went to a very healthy diet. And what is a healthy diet? Not what we're doing.

    Of course, we forgive you. You were trained to be a "Doctor", smarter, faster and stronger than us! jk I have Guillain Barre Syndrome, that paralyzed me from the neck down and on the left side of my face, but I did find a great Dr who recognized it before it got my life. But so many others are being "misunderstood" by Dr.s that they are going to be disabled for life for no reason! We, the patients are the specialists. Having said that, I am so glad I found you and your Ted talk because our adopted son who turned 19 this past Spring, had an attack of Pancreatitus last winter. You have made me a better Mom because I am going to change the foods that we have at home now, a lot more than we have over the past 6 months. Prayerful hugs.

    Brilliant! I have COPD and developed diabetes from the medication I'm on for my lungs, it's only type 2 but I still have to test my sugar(Which I cut from my diet, except for natural sugars in the fruits I eat). I have lost some weight but it takes me a year to lose 5 or 6 kilos by diet alone. I can't exercise really, I do try and walk each day but I have permanent psuedomonas, so sometimes I just can't breath. I'm on 4litres of oxygen 24/7, I recently had valves inserted and they do help even though slightly. I won't give up I'm determined to beat diabetes, I can't beat the COPD but I can build my stamina up so I can do more. I don't understand how people can be comfortable being over weight, o can't and havent been able to, I can't,sit walk anything I hate it. I will lose it again I need to not just for the diabetes but so I can breath easier. Ok rant over don't hate on me plz

    I’m lean and eat healthy food(also calorie restricted) but I got diabetes at 21. All those who junk on fast food start advising me on food and lifestyle. Unfortunately, many people still believe it is due to overeating.

    this may be the dumbest Ted talkI've seen … STARCH causes insulin resistance and diabetes? Wow, I guess all the Blue zones, Asia, Africa and South America (before we brought them the western diet) we laden with diabetes? They getgot over 70% of their calories from starches? Guess what Doc? Diabetes was basically non-existent there! You didn't get overweight by eating starches, you got it from eating processed foods and a boat load of fats.

    I avoid sugar and carbs as much as i can with 16 to 20 hour fasting a day. it improved my BMI, feel more energy, improved skin no more acne and without going to gym.

I can totally see why. However, this video was published in 2013. I'm wondering if there is a followup? Has Peter Attia been working on this since the broadcasting of this one? Sure would like to know his more recent take aways.

    My only issue is doctors like this consistently saying just “diabetes”, rather than making the constant distinction between type 1 and type 2.
    I’m so sick of people telling my type 1 diabetic son that he needs to go on a specific diet to cure his diabetes. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    The remorse is marched by the misjudgment shown to his needy patient. What a shame we cannot always go back to remedy some important moments in our lives. Some doctors are totally arrogant until it happen to them or their families; just like here.
    I sincerely thank this doctor for sincerely seeing acknowledging the mistakes we sometimes make about things and people.
    We do not know it All, even when we are doctors, nurses and other medical professionals. We have lots more to learn and understand.

These TED talks are more about pseudo-science and manipulation than anything close to real science.

    Ketosis + one meal a day + no grains (particularly gluten) + 6-10 cups of leafy greens every day works for me. Used to weigh 350 lbs 5 years ago and now weigh 175. Life long problem of obesity gone for good.

    Lots of foods contain carbs: fruit & veg incl sweet potatoes; dairy products eg milk, yoghurt; grains eg oats; legumes eg kidney beans…It seems most of our foods contain carbs. Which carbs are we supposed to cut down on? Sigh. Completely confused.

    I'm glad he apologised to that poor woman. We need more doctors like this who have empathy and are willing to admit that they can treat their patience with less respect than they deserve. In my experience the doctors I've met are often careerists who don't really like seeing patients at all and are not interested enough to investigate their issues. When they do see you they talk to you in reproachful tones as though berating a wayward child for not doing what they consider to be the 'correct' thing(s). They don't voluntarily give you information, you have to extract it from them. They're meant to be there to serve the public but you end up feeling like you're taking up their valuable time. The very thought of needing to see a GP makes me very stressed.

    his delivery was way too slow. most people have a limited attention span. the insulin resistance concept has been around a long time. he still didn't give his hypothesis on the cause of insulin resistance….. im guessing excess carbs…but just saying that is too simple. Once patient teaching is done, then it becomes a psych issue as the patient sneaks in food from grubhub or has their relatives deliver sodas, sweet tea and carb bombs…. Psych is completely ignored in medicine.

    An important cause of disturbances are the so called Endocrine Disruptors, like phthalates that mimic estrogen and are added to polyvinyl chloride tubes used to distribute water that reaches people's kitchens after many kilometers of pipes that should be replaced or at least, coated with some safer material.     That was by heart and made me cry. I am struggling with the same problem, dificculty to lose weight even eat keto and exercice a litlle but i am felling so good even over weight, so free not to craving sugar anymore , thanks all open mind doctors and you are already making the different, to me, and many persons who asking theyself want we need to do to more get results, belive that woman save a lot of people thru you, bless you all and thanks for sharing 🙂

    Around 6 months ago, I started to injecting insulin in my body in order to control my diabetes. But, I started gain weight much and my blood sugar was not controlled as supposed. So I started to study how to control the diabetes without injecting insulin or eating the medicine. And I found insulin resistance of my body is causing the diabetes, as worse I making my body fat. So I started to study how to decrease insulin resistance in my body, and found that I should not eat carb. Furthermore, our body is changing protein to blood sugar if we eat too much. Therefore we don’t have choice but to eat healthy fat(Because we only have three choice, Carb/Protein/Fat). So I started eat much fat and removed carb, in order to balance my insulin resistance. Anyway, if you are lucky enough then you will see my comment here and the video. Good luck! I’m lucky enough that I have escaped from diabetes, and have lost a lot of pounds!

    This guy is re-inventing the wheel. KETO is the answer. Greatly reduce sugar and starches/grains, up the saturated fats and green veg. 6-10 cups a day and you’ll be fine.

    I always thought being fat WAS the symptom of diabetic disorders. Turns out I could be right. I knew some one who couldnt understand WHY they suddenly started piling on pounds then after tests discovered they had an insulin resistance issue. Carbs – Bingo ! carbs from veggies are best but cut back on the pasta potatoes rice breads and pastries and cereals. Have those in small amounts and not too often also fruit juices are packed with carbs. Everything in moderation and always leave the table wanting a little more.Oh and while we are about upside down medical oppinions, I have the impression that some smokers somke because of chemical element that the brain uses (for some people) and im not talking nicotine. I have noticed a lot of people who are smokers share some traits. but this is pure speculation and not scientific. Just saying.

    I would have wanted to know this information when my Grandmother was alive. I had to protect her from lots of horrible looks from people thinking she was too fat. I know what she ate as I was taking care of her and making her food, healthy food. We live in a society of people who think we all have to be thin, now I know that is true!! People can be cruel, so sad that I can't let her know what I just heard. People need to change their view about the fact that we are all not alike, what works for one person may not work for another. Not punishing people because their body is not doing what it is supposed to. Thank-you for this information. Thank-you for humbling yourself to say you were wrong. GOD bless you and I hope you can have peace in battling this insulin resistant problem. As we age our body's become more problematic. Take care…

    "i've hooked up with the best and brightest diabetes doctors" That was your first mistake. It was these idiots that had it all wrong in the first place. Go watch Dr. Berg. Follow him and all will be well. I have gotten off ALL my meds simply doing a very simple thing. Get rid of the sugar.

    Dr Peter Attia……Your amazaing!!! I want to talk with you…….Your message is DEEP!! I was on Diabetes meds for 8 yeras….8 years!! 350 lbs. I wanted help so bad. I tried everything. I'm writing this and crying with so much deep appreciation for doctors like you who have taken the risk of questioning the status quo. I meet a Dr who believes and shares many of the same ideas about Diabetes and related ailments you mentioned. My AIC is back to range and have been off of meds for the past 4 years. I will continue to follow you!!! Your true love for human life is evident!! All the power to you!!

    I grow fat really quick even at 1800K a day(anything over 1300K) when I am not moving around much, but loose it when I control what I eat(1600K) and walk around at least 1.5 hours .The research into diabetes is not much because it is often thought it is human behavior related, where the solution is for people to mind what they eat. Also obesity is purely eating vs activity habits. Yes Insulin resistance is a problem, but it usually leads from overeating and making the body overwork insulin production. In short eat right or go crazy on food but atleast have a plan to burn it before the body gets a chance to store it.
    Its not magic, stop looking for excuses else where on why people become fat. blame your lifestyle. I am not saying there are exceptions.
