Is Upma Good For Diabetes?

Hello, I’m Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com,
researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I’m going to answer the question, is
upma good for diabetes. But before we get into that, make sure you

complications by clicking the link below. Upma, you can insert your own joke here. Upma is a South Indian breakfast dish. It is generally cooked as a thick gruel from
dry roasted semolina or coarse rice flour. Depending on the “family recipe” other
seasonings and/or vegetables are added during the cooking process. Upma is made with rava. If you don’t know what rava is, check out
our video on “Diabetes and Rava.” The rava is toasted, usually in a wok, and
then set aside as cooking oil, various spices, herbs, veggies, and water are added to the
wok and brought to high heat. Then the rava is placed back into the wok
until all the water has been absorbed. It is often garnished cilantro, coconut, lemon
or again, whatever the family recipe calls for. Now if you did watch our video on rava, you
know that the GL of rava is around 50. Those with diabetes want to try to keep with
foods who whose glycemic load is below 10. So right away I was skeptical if this dish
made from rava would be good for those with diabetes. But I kept on researching. Since upma is primarily an Indian dish, I
decided to check with Dr Rajesh Kesari who is one of the most respected Diabetologist
in Delhi. Here is his take on whether or not upma is
good for those with diabetes: “the biggest problems with foods like upma,
made with semolina ( rava, sooji), is their high glycemic index , such products are quickly
absorbed into blood and result in quick and high peaks in blood glucose levels- this makes
such foods undesirable for diabetics.” So is upma good for diabetes? Who am I to disagree with a very respected
doctor who practices in the country where upma was invented and is consumed daily by
millions of people. No, upma is not good for diabetes. I hope this answered your question is upma
