How Intermittent Fasting Affects Hormones

hey guys so in today’s video I’m gonna
be talking about intamin fasting growth hormone anabolic hormones catabolic
hormones an evolutionary perspective on fasting and I’m gonna wrap together how
intimate fasting affects your hormonal profile because the benefits of fasting
really do go beyond caloric restriction losing weight is something you can do
without fasting so what’s the point in doing it and that’s basically the
purpose of this video so go back in time thousands and thousands of years ago
imagine yourself not necessarily on the equator but in a temperate to cold
climate perhaps somewhere in northern Europe maybe in New Zealand or Australia
ten thousand years ago now in wintertime do you really think that you’re going to
have frequent meals available to you do you really think that you’re gonna have
a banana muffin frozen in a freezer that you can go and defrost in the microwave
while you watch The Big Bang Theory on TV no obviously not a body’s thus are
designed to go hours and hours and hours without food one of the most modern
tribes which is an example of what true human diets look like I found in Brazil
I think it’s in Brazil it’s somewhere in the Amazon and there aren’t many of them
left but there are a great case study for looking at what true humans when
they haven’t been exposed to technology actually eat and they very clearly go
days without eating sometimes sometimes they go for days without eating a proper
meal and finally catch something hunt something and then feast on that for a
day now there are mixed studies about whether we actually did go days without
food you know they would have clearly been some people in the past who had
food available to them all the time but in general there would have been times
that you have to just go without food right and the human body has to be
designed for that otherwise we would have died very quickly if we were not
able to go without food for a day or so now that we’ve got that little
evolutionary perspective out of the way let’s talk about the hormone
responses that occurs after fasting so let’s talk about anabolic hormones first
anabolic hormones are responsible for the growth of muscles and various tissue
and basically protein synthesis and examples of these hormones are insulin
testosterone and growth hormone and to the contrary the catabolic hormones
which basically eat muscle um cortisol which is the steroid hormone and
response to stress you have adrenaline and you also have blue kitchen so those
are basically the opposing hormones that when your testosterone goes up cortisol
goes down as with growth hormone when you growth hormone and testosterone go
down your cortisol goes up they have an inverse relationship so when you’re
doing intimate fasting some really interesting things happen your
testosterone goes up short term your growth hormone goes up but in a short
term fast by 2,000 percent for men and thirteen hundred percent for women now
growth hormone is only elevated for a few minutes but this gives rise and
provokes the release of things like insulin like growth factor which can be
bad in certain circumstances and certain amounts but that is really important for
muscle growth so that something short-term fasting seems to do the
particular study I’m referencing right now looked at two day fasts so it’s
relatively short-term and that was what in juice a 2,000 percent increase in
growth hormone for men so intamin fasting increases your growth hormone
and various other anabolic hormones such as testosterone it does however give
rise to cortisol not eating as a stress on the body it’s not a good thing for
the body you know but the adaption you get from that the adaptation you get
from that is good and it’s a good stress on the body and makes your cells more
resilient to stress similar to exercise exercise is stressful on the body
you know deadlifting 200 kilograms is a stress on the body but it’s good because
it’s later benefited by the adaptation you get to it when you fast and growth
hormone is released from the pituitary gland in the brain this gives rise to
insulin like growth because like I said growth was only
released for a few minutes and the increase in growth horn is really
important for a number of physiological functions for example growth hormone is
really important for muscle gain obviously gaining muscle it’s also
important for fat loss right um and it’s also important for nude bone density
like even new memory and and mood as I said tied in with growth hormone which
many people think is only about muscle growth and so so that’s quite
interesting too so human growth hormone cortisol and adrenaline they increased
blood glucose human growth hormone is released in that’s largest anan while we
sleep right when the body is recovering and it releases blood glucose by
increasing human growth hormone around 4 a.m. leading into about 6 a.m. or you
have the the largest natural cortisol secretion from the body circadian rhythm
and this prepares the body for the day by increasing blood glucose levels this
allows the body to get ready for the day by pushing glucose out of glycogen
stores in order to fuel the body for energy one of the best predictors of
longevity and a healthy and long long life is actually muscle mass despite
what many people think another cool and important factor which is is good for
longevity and health and the long term is socialising that’s one that many
people don’t think of but muscle tissue and muscle mass is a huge indicator of
how long and well you’re gonna live and naturally with ages things like
testosterone decline natural muscular atrophy or loss occurs and that’s
perfectly normal but if you maintain muscle mass in your 20s and your 30s and
you continue to strength train your metabolism is gonna stay relatively
quick you’re gonna maintain quite a bit of muscle mass since your 40s and 50s
um because you’ve maintained that and it’s hard to lose once you have it but
inevitably it will start to atrophy with age into your 50s and 60s but you’re
gonna have much more than the average person it’s gonna be a huge predictor of
your chance of living a long life um anyway so human growth hormone thus has
anti-aging properties because it helps with the increase in muscle mass as with
his austere own going down with age human growth hormone
said decline with age around 25 years old as when men was thought to slowly
unfortunately lose to saucer own it’s very gradual but it begins at about 25
26 and the same goes for human growth hormone it declines with age so
practicing things like strength training for example which increases human growth
hormone but also implementing things like intamin fasting can theoretically
be a great way to reduce the rate of aging you experience so you know how
many people will say that it’s important to have something like a banana or some
sort of complex carbohydrate before you train in the gym and that makes sense
you know because you restore your glycogen stores and you allow yourself
to work harder because your muscles are replenished with with their favorite
fuel glycogen stored glucose um but many people find that the performance is
intended at all when they’re in a fasted State and some studies and some
researchers are pointing towards the increase in noradrenaline being
responsible for this and it makes sense as well as having glycogen stores in
your body before your workout you know you don’t lose them all overnight the
noradrenaline increase may potentially help with performance now for the
majority of people fueling up with some sort of carbohydrate before a workout is
gonna foster better results in terms of performance but that increase in
adrenaline may be one of the reasons why people don’t really notice that big of a
difference especially as they become acclimated to it but the rise in growth
hormone especially after your workout may actually be quite important and
recovery right so there has been a pervasive myth about the importance of a
post-workout meal now it can be important to fuel yourself before a
workout and that can potentially be important especially if you’re doing
very very intense workouts in order to spend muscle um but you don’t lose as
much muscle as easily as you may think you do so if you eat before workout it
becomes much less important to eat after the workout but if you fasted before a
workout it potentially may be important to eat afterwards but within the hour or
so after your workout it’s better to just not eat because you have a huge
increase in growth hormone after that that you may want to take advantage of
in order to benefit your strengthen your recovery
now you can fast for hours and hours and hours after your workout for example I
did deadlifts and strength training this morning and I did that at 9 o’clock and
I’m not gonna eat until 6 p.m. tonight now the reason I do that and I’m not
worried about muscle loss is because I’m soul meeting my protein requirements of
0.8 grams per pound of body weight for the entire day and I’m eating enough
calories so as long as you’re eating enough calories you’re hitting all your
macronutrients and micronutrients you really do have nothing to worry about
think about some of the oldest living people in the world like the Sardinian
people in the island with just over a million people and Italy you know they
eat mainly plant-based diets they eat some meat as well they get a lot of Sun
they socialize they are very happy and relaxed lifestyles but something they
also do is take huge breaks in between meals they don’t necessarily practice
intimate and fasting intentionally and do lean gains and omed but they only
have two big meals a day and they don’t really snack they walk around a lot so
they spend a lot of time in ketosis and and this may potentially be one of the
reasons why many of these Blue Zone areas such as the such as the sidonians
or that carians things I say although okay no one’s in
Japan I live – such a long age because they take time to prepare their meals
and take big breaks in between meals so yeah intamin fasting is deeply seeded
in our DNA where I was supposed to I mean we’re not supposed to be eating
frequent frequent frequent meals so growth horn increases by a lot different
studies show different amounts but one of the most famous studies cited that
2,000 percent increase after a two-day fast for men and 1300 for women which is
pretty amazing so that may be really important for gaining muscle losing fat
and that may give you an edge over people who aren’t doing intermittent
fasting doesn’t mean it’s gonna be the be-all end-all you know your calories
and your macros are the most important thing but there’s some potential there
and it may be one of the reasons why intimate fasting is good for anti-aging
as with auto Fujii the process of self recycling cells so that’s it for the

    In a study i saw testoterone increased with a 56 hour fast. I fast for around 18 hours a day will i notice a boost in this you think? Great video btw

    I am 53 years old & am in full blown menopause. I have been intermittent fasting from anywhere from 16-20 hrs a day for ten weeks now and have lost a sufficient amount of weight. I don't weigh myself but my clothes fit much better and I'm fitting into clothes I haven't been able to fit into in a few years. I also weight train and do a half hour of cardio and love doing it in a fasted state, knowing my body is tapping into my fat reserves for energy. I also like all the other benefits that come with it, ex. being insulin sensitive, the spike in human growth hormone, reduces your chance of dementia & Alzheimer's lowers your blood pressure diminishes your chance of diabetes, anti-aging benefits, I can go on & on. My husband has finally jumped on the band wagon and has lost 13 lbs so far. Someone at the gym today complimented me on how great I look. She knew I have been intermittent fasting for awhile now and wants to try it out as well. I almost feel like I need to spread the word or something. I feel selfish keeping it to myself LOL 😋.     I've actually tested this on myself a few times and this is what I've found out (remember this is ME, so it may be different for you).
    When I chug a banana a few minutes before working out, I feel like I could lift a car, lol. It basically supercharges me for about 45 mins. I can to way more reps and have lots of energy.
    When I train fasted, however, I can do it all day. I wont be able to do as many reps, but the amount of sets I can do are endless.
    Basically, when if I finish my workout after having eaten a banana, I'm insanely hungry and feel tired as hell. And when I workout fasted, it's lots more sustainable.

    I just started my intermittent fast 10 days ago(16/8) and I lost 4 pounds already with a caloric deficit, but not reducing total protein grams. Also taking MCT Oil and BCAA's, drinking a lot of water and eating more vegetables. This along with my weights and Total Gym. I'm aiming to lose another 21 to 25 pounds. I should reach that by the summer easily. The first few days were torture, but now I'm getting accustomed to it.

    The more I read and watch about this topic , the more I am lead to the inevitable conclusion that learning to regulate our hormone balances with healthful intent (by what and how we eat and exercise) is one of life's key purposes. Also.. I liked the way the camera flares ever so slightly when you tap your head to point to your pituitary – it's kind of a trippy and nice moment.

    @ 9:45 in regards to Sardinians and long break between meals – how do you know they are in ketosis? I rarely get blood ketone readings above 0.4 mmol/L after 15 to 16 hours of overnight fasting and morning exercise, so don't see how they would be above 0.5 mmol/L which is threshold for being in ketosis.

    We muslim do approximately 17-20 hours of fasting in Ramadan plus not drinking any type of liquid (which is bad i think). I'm planning to keep it up after ramadan except drinking water.

    I fast for the benefits and how it makes me feel. I feel less hungry and more in control while fasting. It was a bit tough at first, but now it is second nature.
