Don’t Eat Too Much Nutmeg

October 9, 2019

in my research on cinnamon I ran across a peculiar paper speculating that certain natural compounds of spices such as nutmeg may form amphetamine-like compounds within the body sufficient to elevate the mood and help provide some added christmas cheer during the holiday season this hypothetical risk was raised as far back as the 60s in the New England Journal where it was pondered whether the age-old custom of adding nutmeg to eggnog arose from the psycho pharmacological effects described in cases of nutmeg intoxication such cases evidently go back to the 1500s or was used as an abortifacient to induce a miscarriage and in the 1960s as a psychotropic drug the researchers conclude that while nutmeg is much cheaper for use and probably less dangerous than heroin you don’t want to take too much the toxic dose of nutmeg is two to three teaspoons which I assumed no one would ever come close to unintentionally until I saw this report in which a couple ate some pasta and collapsed were hospitalized a big mystery until the husband revealed that he had accidentally added one third of a jar of nutmeg to the meal while stoking it that’s like about 4 teaspoons I don’t know how they could have ate it I imagine a poor wife just trying to be polite you you

How can one eat a dish seasoned with four teaspoons of nutmeg? Besides that, yes, nutmeg does have a twist to its taste.

In medieval England, a handful of costly nutmeg was equal in value to 3 lambs. In China nutmeg is thought to have curative effects of diseases of the digestive tract. It was also prescribed for rheumatism. Its side effects include sleeping too much and addiction. Use sparingly.

It takes 6 hours to kick in, lasts 40 hours, and makes you sleep.  It's not "hallucinogenic" but causes drowsiness and dry mouth similar to cannabis.

  • Reply Jabbss March 4, 2014 at 6:43 am

im 13 and ate half the jar, nothing happend beside mixed emotions..

  • Reply StrangeMusicVegan March 17, 2014 at 12:33 am

Yes it is hallucinogenic.Trust me….I was a "psychonaut" during highschool. I took large doses and actually had peripheral hallucinations for days at a time. Im glad I did not die.It basically made you kinda stoney with mild to wild hallucinations. The ceiling would lower up and down, cars would crumble inward(like a blackhole) leaves would walk like animals.Very odd stuff.I had no clue it could be fatal or cause hospitalization. I apparently got very close to damaging my body.It is odd about that couple though…I ingested wayyyyyyyyyy more than them on multiple occasions.

3-4 teaspoon is extremely unlikely to cause over dose /death. i have eaten 2 large jars full.

I won't motivate anyone to try it… just sharing my experience…

  • Reply SanFranciscoBay October 3, 2016 at 10:18 pm

A few years ago, I added 2-3 heaping tablespoons of Nutmeg to a large bowl (4-6 cups) of Oatmeal. I thought it would harmless, similar to adding the same amount of brown sugar. I was wrong. After eating it, I'm 6'/200 pounds, I felt miserable, sick, weak, all my muscles and joints ached and I felt this way for 3-4-5 days. I looked it up and then realized my mistake. I called the spice company McCormick and told them there should be a warning label on their Nutmeg, but I don't think they cared. Long story short, Nutmeg is toxic to your body. Use it in small amounts only, ie 1/4 teaspoon.

In China most families just put one or two nutmeg as a whole into the soup, after the soup boiled the nutmeg will be throw away.Western food industries prefer to grind all sorts of spices into powder for convenience, I wonder whether it's correct or not.

Actually, to my knowledge, most spices are dangerous, when consumed in large amounts. For instance, clove is an excellent addition to many dishes in minute quantities, but it's poisonous! Incidentally, it can also be used as an anesthetic: Have a toothache? Rub some powdered clove on your gum in the area of the offending tooth and that should alleviate the pain a bit. Don't swallow it, though!

  • Reply Donna Lynn April 5, 2017 at 7:51 pm

I'm not sure if preground nutmeg would have the same effects. It loses its flavor and smell so why wouldn't it lose its potency as well? I'm a heavy baker and only use whole nutmeg, grinding it each use and there is no comparison. Freshly ground nutmeg is so much more aromatic, not to mention tastes much better (you also don't need nearly as much as preground). As soon as a spice is ground it begins to degrade. By the time it gets to a supermarket shelf, then you buy it and use it, there isn't much of that nutmeg left. Not to mention that the average person doesn't use enough of it to even use it up before it's "use by date" so someone saying they gobbled up half the jar trying to get "high" really isn't doing anything. You would NEVER be able to ingest that much freshly ground nutmeg. It would burn your mouth and nasal passages so badly, not to mention, it's the dumbest thing you can do.

15 years back when i was in high school my cousin and i each consumed 225.5 g or half a lb of whole nut nutmeg on a Friday after school, we had an LSD like trip that lasted all the way too Monday morning. a few grams can kill you my ass, i wouldn't be here to be typing this now if what you said was true.
