Diabetics feeling pinch as insulin prices rise 8 percent

October 11, 2019

— LEAH — FOR MILLIONS OF DIABETICS — INSULIN ISN’T A LUXURY — IT’S A NECESSITY. BUT FAMILIES SAY THE *COST* OF THE DRUG IS STARTING TO FEEL LIKE IT’S A LUXURY ITEM. OUR CHRIS GOTHNER IS HERE TO TELL US ABOUT A BIG INCREASE IN PRICE. THAT’S CAUSING A PINCH FOR PATIENTS. — CHRIS — 29 MILLION AMERICANS DEAL WITH DIABETES…6 MILLION RELY ON INSULIN TO STAY HEALTHY. BUT PRICES HAVE TRIPLED
FROM 2002 TO 20-13…AND RECENTLY…DRUG COMPANIES INCREASED THEM ONCE AGAIN. THAT’S LED TO PATIENTS…MAKING TOUGH CHOICES JUST TO SURVIVE. 11-YEAR-OLD THEO JACOBSOHN LOVES LEGOS…SO IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT MOM AND DAD OWN A LEGO SHOP… BRICKS AND MINIFIGS We went from being able to be on my husband’s insurance plan to my husband not having an insurance plan anymore. FORTUNATELY…GWEN JACOBSOHN WAS ABLE TO GET INSURANCE THROUGH HER POSTDOCTORAL JOB. HERE’S WHY THAT MATTERS SO MUCH… Theo was diagnosed with diabetes at 3 1/2 years old. LIKE ALL TYPE ONE DIABETICS…THEO RELIES ON INSULIN…A POD…GIVING THE RIGHT DOSE…ALL DAY LONG. I measure out the insulin and then I put in it in the pod and I put it somewhere maybe on my arm and my leg. EVERY LAST DROP…CRITICAL… If theo doesn’t have insulin, Theo will die. …BUT GETTING MORE AND MORE EXPENSIVE THESE DAYS. TWO MAJOR DRUGMAKERS…RECENTLY BOOSTING PRICES BY EIGHT PERCENT. If insurance didn’t cover it, it would cost $650 a month. The cost of insulin just continues to increase. IT’S SOMETHING DR. VANESSA REIN SEES EVERY DAY. THE U-W HEALTH ENDOCRINOLOGIST SAYS HER UNINSURED AND UNDERINSURED PATIENTS ARE HAVING TO MAKE UNHEALTHY CHOICES JUST TO MAKE ENDS MEET. Some people will either skip refills on their prescriptions to save money and other patients sometimes try to stretch their insulin. REIN SAYS PROJECTIONS SHOW TWO-THIRDS OF AMERICANS DEVELOPING DIABETES IN THE COMING DECADES…MAKING THE GROWING INSULIN COST A GROWING PROBLEM. We really need cost relief. SO GROWING KIDS…LIKE THEO…STAY STRONG. It allows me to be a normal kid…well, not normal. Nobody wants to be normal! — CHRIS — THE TWO DRUG COMPANIES — ELI LILLY AND NOVO NORDISK — SAY THEY WORK TO LIMIT THE IMPACT ON PATIENTS BY PARTICIPATING IN DISCOUNT PROGRAMS…AND SAY THE INCREASES WERE BASED ON MANY DIFFERENT FACTORS. RIGHT NOW, NO CLEAR SOLUTION IN SIGHT…AND LOTS OF UNCERTAINTY OVER HEALTH CARE REFORM.
