Bill Aims To Cap Cost Of Insulin In Memory Of His Brother

October 10, 2019

AMERICANS DO NOT TAKE THEIR MEDICINE AS PRESCRIBED TO TRY AND SAVE MONEY. AND THAT IS CERTAINLY TRUE FOR MANY PEOPLE LIVING WITH DIABETES. 25% OF DIABETICS RATION THEIR INSULIN BECAUSE THEY CAN’T AFFORD IT. ONE COLORADO LAWMAKER IS WORKING TO CHANGE THAT. SHAUN BOYD FOUND OUT IT IS VERY CLOSE TO HIS HEART. Reporter: REPRESENTATIVE DYLAN ROBERTS IS BRINGING THE BILL IN MEMORY OF HIS BROTHER WHO DIED RELATED TO A FALL FROM A DIABETIC SEIZURE. IF THE BILL PASSES IT WILL BE THE FIRST STATE IN THE COUNTRY TO CAP THE COST OF INSULIN FOR DIABETICS AND INVESTIGATE WHY THE PRICE HAS SKYROCKETED. WE WERE VERY CLOSE. MURPHY WAS MY BEST FRIEND. Reporter: THREE YEARS AFTER HIS BROTHER MURPHY’S DEATH, REPRESENTATIVE DYLAN ROBERTS INTRODUCED A BILL INSPIRED BY HIS BROTHER’S BATTLE WITH DIABETES AND HIS COMPASSION FOR OTHERS. HE WAS ALWAYS SOMEBODY WHO THOUGHT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER KIDS WHO MAY NOT HAVE BEEN AS LUCKY HAS HIM TO HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE AND ACCESS TO MEDICATION WHEN YOU HAVE TYPE ONE DIABETES. Reporter: ROBERTS SAYS ONE IN FOUR DIABETICS ARE NOW RATIONIN INSULIN BECAUSE OF THE COST. THE PRICE HAS INCREASED 45% IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS AND 700% IN THE LAST 20. IN A FIRST WORLD COUNTRY, WE SHOULDN’T HAVE PEOPLE RATIONING INSULIN JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN’T AFFORD IT. Reporter: HIS BILL WOULD CAP MONTHLY COPAYS FOR INSULIN AT $100 A MONTH. THEY NOW RUN BETWEEN 600 AND 900. AND IT WOULD DIRECT THE COLORADO ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE TO INVESTIGATE WHAT IS DRIVING THE COST INCREASES. JUST THREE COMPANIES MAKE INSULIN. IN THESE THREE COUNTRIES, THEY RAISE THEIR PRICES AT THE SAME AMOUNT AT THE SAME TIME. Reporter: THE BILL WOULDN’T HAVE SAVED HIS BROTHER MURPHY, BUT ROBERTS SAYS HIS BROTHER IS HELPING SAVE OTHERS. IF YOU HAVE TYPE ONE DIABETES, INSULIN IS LIKE OXYGEN. YOU CAN’T SURVIVE WITHOUT IT. WHAT’S GOING ON IS NOT RIGHT. IT SHOULDN’T HAPPEN IN THE UNITED STATES WHERE SOMEONE IS HELD HOSTAGE TO A PRICE INCREASE THAT IS SOUTH OF CONTROL. Reporter: UNDER THE BILL, THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE HAS UNTIL NOVEMBER OF NEXT YEAR TO INVESTIGATE THE INCREASE IN INSULIN PRICING ALL ALONG THE SUPPLY CHAIN AND TO COMPILE A REPORT WITH RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO ADDRESS THOSE INCREASES. THE BILL HAS BIPARTISAN SUPPORT

Thank you for stating if you are type 1 diabetic insulin is like oxygen. Yes all type 1 diabetics should receive low cost insulin across the board but the thing is type 2 will also expect there’s to be free. Most young adults and children have type 1 they don’t have Medicare or social security to help them out. I’m sorry for speaking this but other countries give special attention to type 1 diabetes. Insulin is the only way they can stay alive. Mom of type 1 diabetic.
